AIMS AND SCOPE

Studies in Language and Mind is an open-access, annual e-journal publishing original empirical research, theoretical contributions, and scoping reviews on language and cognition. The journal provides a multidisciplinary platform connecting linguistics, psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, anthropology, and artificial intelligence.

Scoping reviews should systematically map the literature, highlight key concepts, identify research gaps, and guide future investigations. Submissions must clearly describe search strategies, inclusion criteria, and scope, following recognized methodological standards (e.g., PRISMA-ScR).

We welcome contributions on topics including, but not limited to:

  • real-time language processing and cognitive mechanisms

  • neural bases of language functions

  • language development across the lifespan

  • language impairments, their cognitive underpinning and therapeutic interventions

  • research on specific populations (e.g., aphasia, developmental language disorders)

  • language and technology (NLP, computational and AI approaches to language)

  • interdisciplinary studies in psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, clinical linguistics, cognitive sciences, biolinguistics, and language development

All submissions must be in English.

ETHICS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Editor-in-Chief, in consultation with the Editorial Board of Studies in Language and Mind, is responsible for all decisions regarding the acceptance and publication of submitted manuscripts. Editorial decisions are made in accordance with the journal’s Editorial Policy and relevant legal and ethical standards, including those concerning plagiarism, copyright infringement, and defamation.

Manuscripts are evaluated solely on the basis of their scholarly merit and relevance to the journal’s scope, without discrimination on the grounds of race, gender, religion, ethnicity, or political affiliation. The Editor-in-Chief and members of the Editorial Board must declare any actual or potential conflicts of interest and, where such conflicts exist, recuse themselves from the review and decision-making process.

All submitted manuscripts are treated as confidential. Editors and Editorial Board members may not use unpublished materials or ideas contained in manuscripts for personal research without the explicit written consent of the author(s). The journal operates a double-blind peer-review process, in which the identities of both authors and reviewers are concealed from each other throughout the review procedure. The Editor-in-Chief and the Editorial Board take all reasonable measures to ensure the integrity and anonymity of the review process before, during, and after peer review.

GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS

Originality and Submission Policy

Manuscripts submitted to Studies in Language and Mind must represent original work that has not been previously published and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. Simultaneous submission to multiple journals constitutes a serious breach of publication ethics and will result in immediate rejection.

Upon publication in Studies in Language and Mind, manuscripts may not be published elsewhere, in any language, without prior written consent of the Editorial Board.

If the manuscript is based on a funded research project or has previously been presented as a conference paper or oral presentation, this must be clearly indicated in a footnote at the beginning of the manuscript.

Ethical Standards and Responsibility

Authors are responsible for the accuracy, integrity, and legality of the content of their manuscripts. Submissions must not contain unsubstantiated claims or infringe the rights of third parties. The publisher assumes no liability for claims arising from published content.

Manuscripts should provide sufficient methodological and bibliographic detail to enable verification of the presented results. Deliberate falsification or misrepresentation of data constitutes unethical conduct.

Authorship

Authorship should be limited to individuals who have made a substantial contribution to the research and the preparation of the manuscript. Contributors who do not meet the criteria for authorship should be acknowledged appropriately.

Citation and Use of Sources

All sources that have influenced the research must be properly cited. Information obtained through private communication, correspondence, peer review, or evaluation processes may not be used without explicit written permission.

Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce any copyrighted material (e.g. figures, tables) published elsewhere.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism, including verbatim copying, close paraphrasing without attribution, and unauthorized use of visual material, is strictly prohibited. All submissions are screened using plagiarism-detection software.

Manuscripts found to contain plagiarism will be rejected. Published papers shown to be plagiarized will be retracted in accordance with the journal’s retraction policy, and the author(s) may be barred from future submissions.

Conflict of Interest

Authors must disclose any financial or personal relationships that could be perceived as influencing the research or its interpretation.

Corrections and Retractions

Authors are obliged to promptly notify the Editor or Publisher of any significant errors discovered after publication and to cooperate in issuing corrections or retractions where necessary.

By submitting a manuscript to Studies in Language and Mind, authors agree to comply with these guidelines and with the journal’s editorial and ethical policies.

GUIDELINES FOR REVIEWERS

Studies in Language and Mind operates a double-blind peer review process in accordance with the principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Reviewer Responsibilities

Reviewers are expected to submit professional, objective, constructive, and timely evaluations. Reviews must be clearly reasoned, substantiated with scholarly argumentation, and free of personal criticism.

Manuscripts are assessed with regard to relevance to the scope of the journal, originality and scholarly contribution, adequacy of theoretical framework and methodology, quality and validity of data and analysis and clarity of presentation and appropriate use of references.

Ethical Standards and Confidentiality

Reviewers must inform the Editor of any suspected ethical misconduct, including plagiarism, redundant or simultaneous submission, or substantial similarity to other works. They should also identify relevant publications that have not been cited.

All manuscripts and related materials are confidential. Reviewers must not disclose or use unpublished content for personal or professional purposes without written permission from the author(s).

Conflicts of Interest and Competence

Reviewers must declare any conflict of interest (institutional, financial, or personal) and decline the review if such a conflict exists. Reviewers who feel unqualified to evaluate a manuscript or unable to complete the review within the required timeframe must notify the Editor without delay.

Review Procedure

Each manuscript is reviewed by at least two independent reviewers who are not affiliated with the author(s)’ institution, have no recent joint publications with the author(s) and possess appropriate expertise in the subject area.

Reviewers act independently and remain anonymous to the author(s) and to each other. The standard review period is 4 weeks, and reviewing is unpaid.

If reviewer recommendations diverge, the Editor may seek additional reviews or make a decision in consultation with the Editorial Board. Authors may be asked to provide additional information or data, which will be treated confidentially.

Quality Control

The Editorial Board ensures the quality and objectivity of peer reviews. Where well-founded concerns are raised about a review, additional reviewers may be appointed.

HANDLING ALLEGATIONS OF ETHICAL MISCONDUCT

Any individual or institution may report suspected breaches of publication ethics to the Editor-in-Chief or the Editorial Board, supported by relevant evidence. The Editor-in-Chief, in consultation with the Editorial Board, shall initiate an investigation. All materials will be treated confidentially and shared only with those directly involved. Individuals accused of misconduct will be given an opportunity to respond. Confirmed cases will be classified as either minor or serious violations of ethical standards.

Minor Violations

Minor violations, typically arising from misunderstanding or incorrect application of academic norms, will be resolved directly with the involved author(s) or reviewer(s) through notification or a formal warning, without third-party involvement.

Serious Violations

Cases of serious ethical misconduct are decided by the Editor-in-Chief in cooperation with the Editorial Board and, where necessary, external experts. Possible measures (applied individually or jointly) include publication of an editorial notice, notification of relevant institutions, retraction of the article, temporary submission bans, and reporting to professional or regulatory bodies. All procedures follow the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Retraction Policy

Articles may be retracted due to legal constraints, copyright infringement, plagiarism, fraudulent data use, duplicate submission, false authorship claims, or other serious ethical breaches. Retractions may also be issued to correct significant errors. Retracted articles remain accessible in their original form, clearly marked as retracted, with a linked retraction notice.

OPEN ACCESS POLICY

Methodical Perspectives is a fully open-access journal. All published articles are freely available online. Submission, review, and publication incur no fees.

SELF-ARCHIVING POLICY

Authors may archive both the accepted manuscript and the publisher’s PDF version in institutional repositories or on personal websites at any time after publication, provided full bibliographic details and a DOI link to the published version are included.

COPYRIGHT

Upon acceptance, authors transfer copyright to the Publisher. Authors retain all rights if the manuscript is not accepted. The Publisher is granted the right to reproduce, distribute, translate, store, and make the article publicly available in all formats and media, and to be identified as the original publisher.

DISCLAIMER

The views expressed in published articles are solely those of the authors and do not reflect the opinions of the Editor or Editorial Board. Authors bear full legal and ethical responsibility for their work. The Publisher assumes no liability for claims arising from published content.
